For ten years, Docs In Progress has been committed to advancing the work of documentary filmmaking talent by supporting and empowering independent filmmakers of all backgrounds who want to make films to inform the public and even bring about social change. As a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, we could not fulfill our mission without your support. Your tax-deductible contribution allows us to continue to provide quality programs for the independent documentary community and community outreach programs to educate and engage the general public around documentary.
In our first decade, we have become more than just the vision of our founders to have a space where local documentary filmmakers could share their “docs in progress” and get feedback at screenings. We have evolved as more than that nonprofit organization located in the red brick house in downtown Silver Spring. Maryland where aspiring and emerging filmmakers come to learn, connect, and develop. We have become more than just a social media presence sharing information and resources on documentary filmmaking with more than 15,000 people around the globe. We’ve become all these things and more.
And we’ve done it thanks to you. Individual contributions helped us launch a scholarship program for our production classes and camps, built our staff capacity, and have kept our roundtables, screenings, and online resources free or near-free for all of our 10 years.
NOW IT’S TIME TO SUPPORT OUR SECOND DECADE…
Your support will help Docs In Progress continue to innovate programs to foster and support new voices in documentary filmmaking while also spotlighting documentary as a force to bring together community dialogue. Among the programs we plan to launch and sustain with your support:
Filmmaker Residency Program: Bring an established documentary filmmaker to the Doc House where he or she will have space to edit a project or gather research at nearby institutions while also sharing work and expertise with the Docs In Progress community.
Revamped Docs In Progress Website: Our website has a wealth of resources — if you can find them. In 2015, we plan to relaunch docsinprogress.org so that it is more user-friendly (including on phones!) and better showcases the work of hundreds of our program alumni.
Production Training for Nonprofits: in 2014, we piloted a new subsidized program where we trained local arts nonprofits how to make short documentary-style videos to showcase the incredible work that they do. We would love to expand this hands-on program to more nonprofits in 2015.
A Seed Grant: While we know this program may take a few years to make happen, we know that funding is and will be one of the biggest needs among emerging documentary filmmakers. We are looking for funders and sponsors who would like to make a sustainable seed grant a reality.
