Docs In Progress attracts filmmakers and aspiring filmmakers of all ages to our various screenings and classes. But we also believe in the importance of building and nurturing audiences for documentary.
Documentary Appreciation Salon
This salon series brings together filmmakers and documentary film aficionados to discuss and debate great issues in documentary cinema. Each salon will focus around a particular sub-genre or issues in documentary. As a way to encourage greater discourse on documentary film, this series is free to the public. The Documentary Appreciation Salon has taken place at the Docs In Progress Documentary House in Silver Spring, the Modern Times Coffeehouse at Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington DC, and Kensington Row Bookshop in Kensington, MD.
Alumni Screening Series
This series features finished documentaries by Docs In Progress alumni and associates screened in their entirety followed by a discussion with the filmmaker(s). This series takes place at the Docs In Progress Documentary House to allow for an intimate discussion.
Alumni Screening Series at Your Door
Docs In Progress recently established a new program in which we partner with local senior homes and centers to screen documentary films selected from our filmmaker alumni who have completed their documentaries and wish to participate in the program. Following the screening of the film, either the filmmaker or a Docs In Progress moderator engages the viewers in a conversation about the film, the themes it raises, and how this relates to their own life experiences. Through these screenings, senior citizens are engaged in a conversation about topical issues. Recent screenings include The Power of Forgiveness at Charter House in downtown Silver Spring.
