The low-light capability of new cameras is changing the rules of the game, nowhere more than in documentaries. The technical tools of cinematography are undergoing an intense transformation, but the goal remains the same- how to create the perfect image for your story.

This hands-on workshop with experienced DP Rafael de la Uz (see bio below) will look at the use of lighting techniques for one- and two-person crews who may be working quickly and on a budget, but who care about the look they are achieving. We will work with several lighting instruments and grip gear, to learn different techniques for placement and lighting in control in real world settings.  Among the topics to be covered:

* How to make beautiful images using only one or two lights
* How to use a combination of existing lights and supplementary “film” lights for interviews * Working with a combination of natural and artificial light Dealing with non-ideal interiors (such as fluorescents and overhead lights)
* Lighting interior spaces at night
* Rigging techniques: How to avoid the use of stands without dropping your gear
* How to work quickly, being discrete and flexible, but allowing you to focus on your subject rather than the set-up once shooting begin

While Docs In Progress and the instructor will be providing cameras for the workshop exercises, participants are welcome to bring your own cameras if you want to see how lighting impacts the look of what you will be working with.
