Docs In Progress kicks off its 2012 monthly “Evening with the Expert” series with one of the most fundamental questions for any filmmaker (documentary or otherwise): how can I actually get my project to come to life when I don’t have any funds yet?  How can you apply an entrepreneurial spirit to filmmaking?  How do you micro-budget?  What is involved in building strategic partnerships?  How can social media be your best friend?  How can you get traction for online fundraising campaigns through Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdfunding sites?  How can a grassroots approach to fundraising also pay off in friendraising? This talk will feature two local filmmakers who have been funding and producing their films in stages: Kiley Kraskouskas and Rachell Shapiro.  Read more about them below.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Kiley Kraskouskas is an experienced producer and manager with entrepreneurism in her DNA. Prior to launching Essakane Film, she was a project producer at the award-winning company Cortina Productions where she designed and produced films and interactive media for high-profile corporate, government, and university clients. Prior to Cortina she spent three years producing documentaries and goverment projects for Rock Creek Productions. In June of 2011 she joined forces with co-producers Andrea Papitto and Leola Calzolai-Stewart to thell the story of the most remote music festival in the world, Mali’s Festival in the Desert. In order to fund the three week, multi-camera shoot in Timbuktu, Kiley led her team to raise nearly $30,00 in two separate crowdfunding campaigns through both Kickstarter and IndieGogo.   In November of 2011 she launched Thinking Forward Media a boutique communications agency specializing in marketing, PR, crowd engagement, and production focused on tourism & development. She also loves consulting on crowdfunding campaigns and seeing new ideas come to life. Kiley holds a Master’s degree in Sociology from New York University and a BA in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Denver. Her documentary film credits include, Technostorks, The S.S United States: Architect of a Maritime Nation, and Evolution of Dad.

Rachell Shapiro is an award-winning, experienced producer, writer and director who attributes the passion and dedication she puts into her work to the inspiration she garners from life’s experiences. Rachell has been producing educational, informational, promotional and documentary films for a variety of clientele ranging from government agencies to non-profit organizations for more than eight years. She has done work for organizations and agencies such as: Department of Homeland Security, the United States Navy, the United States Air Force, The Department of Defense, The US Department of Veterans Affairs and the FAA, just to name a few.  Her documentary credits include The S.S United States: Architect of a Maritime Nation, and Stealing the Light. Her latest film is a short fiction film From Hell to Here, which explores the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) through the mind of a Vietnam Veteran.  Though not a documentary, this social issue film has a goal to make a difference and draw more attention to PTSD and the stigmas attached to it. Rachell created a strategic partnership with a production company to help in the production of From Hell to Here as well as launching a crowdfunding campaign via Indiegogo and raising over $11,000 to put towards the making of the film. Before launching her campaign she created a sole proprietorship LLC to house the film, Creative Progress Productions, and spent months actively involved in social media gaining a grassroots support and audience for her film.
