Docs In Progress® is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. We are governed by a Board of Directors which currently has seven members.
MISSION
Docs In Progress gives individuals the tools to tell stories through documentary film to educate, inspire, and transform the way people view their world.
VISION Creating community through documentary film
Docs In Progress creates and fosters a supportive community for documentary filmmakers. By developing, encouraging, and celebrating new and diverse voices in documentary film, we also seek to deepen the public’s experience, understanding, and appreciation for documentary as a form of art and expression. We do this by offering an array of programs aimed at aspiring and experienced documentary filmmakers and the broader community. These include:
- Classes, workshops, talks, consultations, and other programs focused on enhancing and improving the art, craft, technical skills, business acumen, and professional development of documentary filmmakers at all experience levels and stages of the filmmaking process.
- Public screenings of unfinished documentaries to give filmmakers a chance to get constructive feedback from audiences in a nurturing, moderated workshop setting and the public a better understanding of the creative process.
- Programs and space which nurture a vibrant and dynamic documentary community, including networking events, a fiscal sponsorship program, online resources, and peer-centered support networks.
- Screenings and discussion groups of documentary films which help enhance public appreciation for the documentary art form.
- Opportunities to involve the broader community by matching people and organizations with a story to tell with filmmakers looking for projects and providing technical assistance to organizations interested in understanding what goes into making a documentary.
VALUES
The following outcomes reflect our core values and principles:
- Docs In Progress offers opportunities for documentary filmmakers to be immersed in an environment where they can explore the art of cinematic storytelling and have the freedom to make films that reflect a diverse range of topics and viewpoints.
- Docs In Progress maintains a supportive artistic environment built on honesty, trust and openness that allows filmmakers to share ideas, learn from others and develop their individual potential.
- Docs In Progress connects the public with documentary filmmakers and their work in the belief that this form of engagement enhances the work of the filmmakers, public understanding of the creative process, and the artistic, cultural, and civic life of the community.
- Docs In Progress cultivates collaborative community partnerships that encourage and inspire new levels of creativity.
